india-us

the prime minister is back to home to handle his daily affairs after a historic visit to united states.he has to silence his critics now particularly the left and the bjp.the lest, one of the coalition partner has always been against the govt policies and this time also was not a surprise.the bjp did spare some time from the "family" feud to point fingers at the deal, that too before the left could do so,inorder to prove itself an effective opposition.the fact however is that this step was initiated by the former pm vajpayee.manmohan singh was given a red carpet welcome, the first for any indian pm.infact, the "musharraf man" was forced to cancel his us trip when he was denied the same welcome as to his indian counterpart.manmohan singh signed the deal under the nssp(next step in strategic partnership).india has been recognised as "the responsible nuclear state",allowing her to buy the much needed nuclear fuel for her dying nuclear plants.in return india has agreed to seperate its civilian and military sites and bring the former under the international safeguards.the nuclear energy accounts for only 2-3% in power generation as compared to about 70% in france.india has been aiming to generate 20000-30000mw from nuclear energy apart from the aimbitious fast breed reactor.however these plans were backfooted when india was blacklisted after pokhran blasts in 1998..bush has promised to emend the existing us laws and persuade her allies to supply the reuired infrastructure to india.britain, the biggest ally(read "biggest chamcha") of us initially denied to have any nuclear relations with india but soon pledged to follow the us line.it now remains sen as of when and how us fulfills her promises which, according to experts, will be a formidable task given the decreasing popularity of bush.
